Chapter 2: The Message on Her Phone

Vanessa’s lips trembled, but she lifted her chin.

“It was only a draft.

I was trying to make this house work for all of us.”

“By removing my son?” Luca asked.

“You’re twisting everything.”

Matteo reached for his father’s hand.

Luca held it tightly.

“Who prepared these pages?”

Vanessa glanced toward the guests.

“No one.

I made them myself.”

“That’s not true,” I said.

Every face turned toward me.

That afternoon, I had seen a thick envelope beside Vanessa’s purse.

The same heading was printed across it—but there had been a law firm’s name underneath.

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“Claire is a maid.

She has no idea what she saw.”

Before I could answer, Vanessa’s phone lit up on the table.

She snatched for it, but Luca reached it first.

A message preview filled the screen:

DID HE SIGN THE NEW TRUST YET?

MATTEO’S SHARE MUST BE CHANGED BEFORE THE WEDDING.

Matteo looked up at his father.

“What share?”

Vanessa went completely still.

Luca slowly raised his eyes to her.

“You weren’t reorganizing my home,” he said.

“You were changing my son’s future.”

“It isn’t what you think.”

“Then unlock the phone.”

Vanessa backed away.

And from the doorway, a man’s voice suddenly said, “Don’t give him anything, Vanessa.”

Luca turned—and the color drained from his face.
