Chapter 2: Still Warm from Someone's Hand

The baker shoved the owner's hand away and yanked the handle hard.

The freezer door swung open.

A small boy tumbled out, lips blue, body limp.

The baker caught him before he hit the floor.

"Call someone!

Now!"

The girl threw herself down beside her brother, grabbing his hand, screaming his name over and over.

The owner didn't move.

He just stood there, staring at the boy — not with shock, but with something colder.

The baker looked up at him.

"How long was he in there?"

Silence.

"How long?!"

The owner finally spoke, his voice low and strange.

"He shouldn't have been in the back room."

The baker felt the boy's hands.

Ice cold.

Too cold for just a few minutes.

"This didn't just happen."

He looked at the girl.

"How long has your brother been in there, sweetheart?"

She could barely speak through the sobs.

"Since…

since this morning."

The baker went still.

It was nearly four in the afternoon.

He turned back to the owner — and saw something he hadn't noticed before.

A heavy metal latch on the outside of the freezer door.

The kind that locks from the outside.

It was still warm from someone's hand.
