Chapter 1: The Handprint on the Glass

The little girl screamed that her brother was in the freezer, but the bakery owner hurled bread at her like she was the problem.

"Get out!"

The bag hit the tile floor beside her knees.

She was covered in flour and tears, shaking so hard she could barely point toward the back room.

"He's in there!"

The owner stepped in front of her, furious.

"Stop lying."

The girl crawled toward the metal freezer door, sobbing, her tiny hands leaving flour marks on the floor.

Then a young baker froze.

A faint banging sound came from behind the freezer.

"What was that sound?"

The girl's face broke with terror.

"He can't breathe!"

A small handprint appeared on the frosted glass.

The owner's face went pale, but he still blocked the way.

"Don't open it."

The baker pushed past him.

"Move."

The girl screamed through tears,

"Please hurry!"

The baker grabbed the freezer handle.

Frost cracked across the glass as a tiny hand pressed from inside.

The owner reached to stop him.
