Chapter 2: Someone Made Sure You Believed She Was Gone

Part 2 ⬇️
The older woman's name was Ruth.
Daniel's aunt.
The one person at the wedding who had known his late wife.
Her hands were shaking.
"Daniel, I need you to listen to me very carefully."
The bride — Victoria — stepped forward.
"She doesn't know what she's talking about.
She's confused."
Ruth didn't even look at her.
"That necklace belonged to Claire." She paused.
"Your Claire.
The one you told everyone d*ed in that accident three years ago."
Daniel went still.
"I know it's hers, Daniel.
Because I was with her the day she bought it.
I watched her put it on.
She never took it off."
The little girl looked up at her father.
Still holding the necklace.
Still not understanding.
Daniel turned slowly toward Victoria.
"How did my daughter get Claire's necklace?"
Victoria said nothing.
"How did she get it, Victoria?"
Someone near the back of the room set down their glass.
The sound was sharp in the silence.
Victoria finally opened her mouth.
But before she could speak, Ruth said the one thing that made the whole room go cold.
"Daniel…
Claire's body was never formally identified.
You were told it was her.
But I don't think anyone ever actually confirmed it."
Daniel stared at her.
"What are you saying?"
Ruth looked at the necklace.
Then at Victoria.
"I'm saying someone made sure you believed she was gone."
