Chapter 1: The Necklace on the Stone Floor

The little girl had been standing quietly beneath the floral arch when the blonde woman suddenly noticed the silver necklace around her neck.

For most of the afternoon, the five-year-old had stayed close to the edge of the wedding party, wearing her ivory flower-girl dress and trying not to draw attention to herself.

Then the bride stepped toward her.

Her eyes dropped to the necklace.

Her expression shifted.

"Get that thing off your neck."

The little girl instinctively reached for the pendant.

She didn't understand why the woman sounded so angry.

Before she could respond, the bride grabbed the necklace and tore it away.

The silver chain slipped from the child's neck and fell across the stone floor.

The little girl gasped.

Around them, champagne glasses rattled.

Several guests turned.

But the bride didn't apologize.

She looked down at the frightened child as if the girl had done something wrong.

Then someone came rushing through the crowd.

Daniel.

The groom.

And the little girl's father.

He saw his daughter crying.

He saw the broken chain among the scattered flower petals.

Then he looked at the woman he had been preparing to marry.

"Don't you ever touch my daughter."

The bride tried to argue.

Daniel stepped between them.

The little girl moved behind her father, still crying.

The bride reached toward him as if she could somehow pull him away from the child.

She couldn't.

Daniel looked at her for a long moment.

Then he turned toward the guests.

"The wedding is over."

The entire reception fell silent.

The bride stared at him in disbelief.

Only minutes earlier, everything had been perfect.

The flowers.

The champagne.

The music.

The dress.

Now every guest was watching Daniel choose his daughter over the ceremony.

But the moment that truly changed everything came seconds later.

The little girl noticed the silver necklace lying on the ground.

She carefully knelt beside the broken chain and white flower petals.

Her small hands trembled as she picked it up.

"It was my mother's."

Daniel froze.

The bride said nothing.

Then an older woman standing near the champagne tower slowly stepped forward.

Her face had gone pale.

She stared at the necklace in the child's hands as if she had seen a ghost.

"Daniel…

that necklace wasn't hers."

Nobody understood what she meant.

Not at first.

Daniel turned toward her.

The little girl looked up.

And for the first time, the bride stopped looking angry.

She looked afraid.

Because the older woman wasn't talking about the child's mother.

She was talking about the necklace itself.

And judging by the way the bride reacted, that tiny piece of silver was connected to something Daniel had never been told.

Something that reached far beyond the scene everyone had just witnessed at the wedding.

Daniel looked from the necklace…

to the bride…

then back to the older woman.

And the question on his face was the same one every guest was suddenly asking.

If the necklace didn't really belong to the person everyone thought it did…

then where had it actually come from?
