The doctor blocked Diane from reaching the bed.
"Ma'am, you need to step back.
Now."
Diane straightened her jacket like nothing had happened.
"She's confused.
She just woke up from a fall."
"She's not confused," Ryan said.
His voice was quiet.
That scared me more than shouting would have.
He turned to Lily.
"Who is Noah, baby?"
Lily's fingers tightened around mine.
"Grandma's neighbor's boy.
He comes to her house sometimes."
The room went cold.
Ryan looked at his mother.
"What did you do to him?"
Diane said nothing.
"Mom.
Answer me."
She looked away.
"You're both overreacting."
Then the nurse spoke from the doorway — softly, like she almost didn't want to say it.
"The doctor noted the pattern of bruising during the initial exam.
He already called someone."
Diane's head snapped toward her.
"Called who?"
The nurse didn't answer.
But we heard footsteps in the hallway.
Diane's face changed for the first time.
Not guilt.
Not remorse.
Fear.
She reached for her bag.
Ryan stepped in front of the door.
"You're not leaving."
And then Lily whispered something that made my whole body go still.
"Mommy…
she has a box.
At her house.
She told me never to touch it."
