The Doctors Said My Daughter's Injuries Didn't Match A Simple Fall, And When I Asked Her What Really Happened, She Looked Toward The Doorway In Terror.

Lily lay unconscious beneath the white sheets.

"Baby, Mommy's here," I whispered, grabbing her hand.

Ryan stood beside me, pale and shaking.

"What happened to her?"

The nurse glanced toward the doorway.

Before she could answer, my mother-in-law Diane walked in.

"She fell," Diane said calmly.

I pulled the blanket away from Lily's legs.

My breath stopped.

There were bruises in different places across her arms and legs.

Some looked recent.

Others didn't.

Ryan stared at them.

"Mom…

what is this?"

Diane barely reacted.

"She plays rough."

I looked at her.

"All of these came from one fall?"

"She's always climbing things."

My hands started shaking.

For months, Lily had begged me not to leave her alone with Diane.

I thought she simply disliked her grandmother's strict rules.

Then I remembered Lily asking me one strange question two weeks earlier.

"Mommy, if Grandma says something is our secret, do I have to keep it?"

I had promised we would talk later.

We never did.

I turned toward Diane.

"What did you do to my daughter?"

Her expression hardened.

"Watch your accusations."

Ryan stepped between us.

"Answer her."

Diane suddenly snapped, "That child needs discipline because neither of you knows how to raise her!"

Something inside me broke.

I rushed forward, grabbed Diane by the collar and sl@pped her once before Ryan pulled me back.

"You touched my daughter!" I screamed.

Diane stared at me with pure hatred.

Then a weak voice came from the bed.

"Mommy…"

I spun around.

Lily's eyes were barely open.

I rushed to her side.

She looked past me directly at Diane and immediately began trembling.

"Don't let Grandma take me home."

Ryan went completely still.

I squeezed Lily's hand.

"What happened, sweetheart?"

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"Grandma said if I ever told you…"

Diane suddenly lunged toward the bed.

But the doctor stepped into her path.

Because Lily's next six words made my husband turn toward his mother like he didn't recognize her anymore.
