Chapter 2: The Woman in the Hallway
Edgar didn't come home drunk.
He came home with a woman.
Nora was still awake on the living room couch when she heard the front door open.
She recognized Edgar's voice immediately.
But the second voice — soft, careful, almost apologetic — belonged to someone she had never heard before.
"She won't be here.
Mom said she goes to bed early."
Nora didn't move.
The woman stepped into the light of the hallway.
She was young.
Maybe 27.
And she was visibly pregnant.
Nora stood up slowly.
The woman froze.
Edgar froze.
And for a long moment, nobody said a single word.
Then Kristina appeared at the top of the stairs, still dressed, as if she had been waiting.
"Well," Kristina said quietly.
"I suppose there's no point pretending anymore."
Edgar turned to Nora.
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
The pregnant woman looked at the floor.
"How long?" Nora asked.
Her voice was completely calm.
Edgar said nothing.
Kristina answered for him.
"Long enough that the child will need a last name."
Nora looked at her husband.
Then at the woman.
Then at the stairs where Kristina stood with her arms folded, watching.
And then Nora noticed something in the woman's hand.
A folded document.
With Nora's name on it.
