Chapter 1: The Bed She Made

That night, my mother-in-law hid a rattlesnake under my pillow after discovering my $25 million life insurance policy.
She smiled at me and said, "Go get some rest, I made your bed." I didn't argue.
I took a blanket and gave the bedroom to my husband.
Hours later, her desperate scream woke up the entire house…
but the real secret was only beginning to come out.
**PART 1**
"When you d:i:e, my son can finally marry a woman who will actually give him children."
Nora Preston heard those words behind the door of her own bedroom as she watched Kristina, her mother-in-law, push a rattlesnake beneath the comforter where she was supposed to sleep that night.
At 35, Nora ran a construction materials distribution company in Phoenix.
She had started by selling supplies from a small rented warehouse and, after 12 years of hard work, had expanded to branches across Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico.
Her husband, Edgar Finch, worked as an administrative coordinator.
He earned a modest salary, but the house in a private neighborhood in Paradise Valley, the cars, and practically the entire family fortune came from Nora.
For 10 years, she had also supported Kristina.
At first, she did it willingly.
She believed helping her husband's mother was part of building a family.
Everything changed when Nora began struggling with fertility.
Kristina never insulted her in front of Edgar.
She preferred hiding her cruelty behind comments that sounded like concern.
"What a shame that such a big house will never have children."
Or:
"My son always dreamed of holding a little boy who would carry his last name."
Edgar listened and said nothing.
Two days earlier, at the recommendation of her financial advisor, Nora had purchased a $25 million life insurance policy.
Because of the risks associated with her business and frequent road trips, the policy made sense.
She made one mistake: she left the documents on the dining room table.
The sole beneficiary was Edgar.
Kristina saw the amount.
Nora would never forget how her expression changed.
That afternoon, a migraine forced Nora to return home almost four hours earlier than usual.
She entered through the garage, removed her shoes, and quietly went upstairs.
Then she heard sounds coming from the bedroom.
Through the half-open door, she saw Kristina wearing thick gloves and holding a cloth bag.
Something was moving inside.
Nora froze when she saw the rattle.
Kristina used a long stick to carefully push the snake between the pillows and the comforter.
Then she arranged the bed until everything looked perfect.
And she whispered:
"Don't blame me.
Edgar deserves another chance.
With those $25 million, he can start over with Heather Perkinson and raise the child you were never able to give him."
Nora felt the air leave her lungs.
Heather Perkinson?
Who was Heather Perkinson?
She wanted to rush inside, scream, and call the police immediately, but she forced herself to think.
She didn't know where the snake had come from or what she could prove.
Kristina could simply claim that the animal had gotten inside from the garden.
So she went downstairs.
A few minutes later, Kristina appeared, acting as though everything was normal.
"Sweetheart, you look pale.
Go lie down.
I changed the sheets so you can rest comfortably."
Nora looked directly at her.
"No.
I'll sleep in the living room tonight."
Kristina lost all the color in her face.
"What do you mean, the living room?"
"Edgar said he was going out drinking with his coworkers.
When he comes home drunk, he snores terribly.
I'd rather let him have the bedroom."
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Then Nora realized something even more terrifying.
Kristina hadn't just planned to harm her for the money.
She had mentioned a woman named Heather Perkinson and a child who, until that moment, Nora didn't even know existed.
And what happened when Edgar came home that night was worse than anyone could have imagined.
---
Who is Heather Perkinson — and what did Edgar bring home that night?
