David went back upstairs to get ready for work.
The moment his footsteps disappeared down the hall, Jessica's expression changed completely.
She walked straight up to Jasmine and lowered her voice to a sharp whisper.
"You think running to Daddy saved you?
That was embarrassing for you, not me."
Jasmine stood her ground.
"You tried to take $3,000 from me for a quad bike.
Dad heard everything."
Jessica smiled slowly.
It wasn't a kind smile.
"Your dad hears what I let him hear.
And he sees what I show him."
Jasmine felt a chill move through her.
"What does that mean?"
Jessica leaned closer.
"It means you should start thinking about where you'll go when he's not around to protect you."
Before Jasmine could respond, Jessica's phone buzzed on the counter.
She glanced at the screen and her whole body stiffened.
Jasmine caught a single word on that screen before Jessica flipped it face down.
One word.
A name.
A name Jasmine recognized — but had no idea was connected to Jessica.
Her stomach dropped.
