Jasmine was sitting on the living-room sofa when her stepmother, Jessica, suddenly grabbed her arm and pushed her toward the front door.
"Pay the rent or clean the whole house by yourself!" Jessica shouted.
Jasmine stared at her in disbelief.
"Why rent?
I live here!
I'm your daughter!"
Jessica glared at her.
"You are not my daughter!
Pay me $3,000, or get out!"
Just then, Jasmine's father, David, came downstairs, looking sleepy and irritated.
"What is going on?!" he asked.
Jasmine turned toward him with tears in her eyes.
"She's demanding $3,000 in rent, or she's kicking me out!"
David looked shocked.
"Rent?
Why?
You're my daughter!
You can live here for free!"
Jessica crossed her arms and replied confidently.
"I'm demanding $3,000 to make her responsible!
And my son needs the money to buy his dream quad bike!"
David stared at her in disbelief.
"So you're charging my daughter $3,000 for your son's quad bike, not to teach her responsibility?"
Jessica tried to explain herself.
"David, I—"
"Enough!" David interrupted angrily.
"My daughter isn't paying a single penny!"
He stepped beside Jasmine and continued firmly.
"If this happens again, you and your son will be the ones paying rent!
Understand?"
Jessica lowered her head and nodded, embarrassed.
David placed his hand on Jasmine's shoulder.
"Don't worry, sweetheart.
Nobody is kicking you out of your own home."
