Chapter 2: Someone Had Kept It

He was standing near the old oak tree at the edge of the yard.

Older.

Thinner.

His hair completely white.

But I would have known that face in the dark.

"Thomas."

My daughter Ruth appeared at my side.

I felt her hand on my arm before I heard her voice.

"Mom.

Sit down.

Please."

"You knew."

She didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

My hands were shaking when I reached the back door.

Ruth stepped in front of me.

"He didn't want to shock you.

We were trying to find the right moment—"

"Fifty years, Ruth."

"Mom—"

"I wore black for a year.

I couldn't say his name out loud for ten years."

She looked at the floor.

"Who told me he was gone?"

Still nothing.

Then Maya tugged my sleeve.

She held up something small.

A folded piece of paper, old and soft at the creases, like it had been opened and closed a thousand times.

"Grandpa said you'd know what this is."

I unfolded it with both hands.

It was a letter.

My own handwriting.

A letter I never sent — because I was told he was already g*ne before I finished writing it.

Someone had kept it.

Someone had given it to him.

And at the bottom, in his handwriting, were four words I had never seen before.
