Chapter 1: The Weight of a Ring

"She Thought Thomas Died 50 Years Ago…
Then Her Granddaughter Said, 'He's Outside.'"
I was eighty years old before I understood that the night I lost Thomas Reed hadn't ended the way everyone told me it did.
The evening began like any other family gathering — my daughter's home, warm lights, too much food, grandchildren running between the furniture.
My granddaughter Maya found me in the corner, the way she always does.
She is seven, and she has never once walked past me without stopping.
"Grandpa said to give you this," she said.
And she placed a gold ring in my hand.
I knew before I turned it over.
I knew from the weight of it.
From the way fifty years collapsed into a single breath.
*Forever Yours.*
Thomas had those words engraved the week before our wedding.
"Where did you find this?"
"Grandpa wears it on a chain."
I looked at her.
"Your grandfather's name?"
"Thomas Reed."
The room kept moving around me.
Glasses clinked.
Someone laughed near the kitchen.
"Thomas d*ed the night before our wedding."
Maya glanced toward the window.
"He's outside."
I have lived eight decades.
I have buried grief, rebuilt a life, watched children become parents and parents become grandparents.
Nothing prepared me for what I saw when I stood up and walked to that glass.

She carried that ring for fifty years without knowing it existed.
