Chapter 10: The Last Move
Patricia had the text within the hour.
She read it twice, then set her phone face-down on the desk with the deliberate care of someone who wanted to choose their next words carefully.
Patricia: This is the link we needed.
Holt, acting as Daniel's agent, attempting to use a member of this household to confirm the target's location after the gate confrontation.
That's coordinated surveillance.
Combined with the photograph of Rosa and the courier delivery this morning, we now have a documentable course of conduct.
Marcus: What does that give us?
Patricia: Enough to file for a civil harassment restraining order in this state, with a strong case for criminal referral.
The Arizona motion becomes almost irrelevant — if a judge here sees this pattern, Elena doesn't need to appear in Arizona.
Daniel will be managing his own legal situation.
Elena: He'll say the text was Holt acting independently.
That he didn't authorize it.
Patricia: He can say that.
But Holt's firm carries his name.
And the text says "D wants confirmation." That's not subtle.
Marcus: I want to call Holt directly.
Patricia: Marcus—
Marcus: Not to threaten him.
To give him the same choice I gave Raymond.
He can cooperate or he can be named in every filing we make from this point forward.
Patricia considered it.
Patricia: Let me make that call.
Professionally, it lands differently.
Marcus: Fine.
Make it now.
Patricia stepped out of the library.
Through the closed door, they could hear the low, even cadence of her voice — not the words, just the tone.
Measured.
Absolute.
Elena was at the window.
Leo was in the portable crib Garrett had brought up, asleep again, one arm thrown wide.
Elena: What happens if Holt doesn't cooperate?
Marcus: Then we file with what we have.
Patricia says it's enough.
Elena: And Daniel?
Marcus: He'll fight it.
He'll file responses, he'll delay, he'll make it expensive.
That's what he does.
Elena: I know.
He's very good at it.
Marcus: So is Patricia.
And she isn't doing this alone.
Elena turned from the window.
Elena: Marcus.
I need to say something and I need you to just hear it without arguing.
Marcus: All right.
Elena: When this is over — when the filings are done and the restraining order is in place and Daniel has run out of moves — I'm going to need to find my own situation.
My own place.
My own footing.
I can't stay here indefinitely as your employee and also as someone you're legally protecting.
It creates a dynamic that isn't fair to anyone.
Including you.
Marcus: You're worried about what it looks like.
Elena: I'm worried about what it is.
You have a marriage to deal with.
Leo needs stability.
And I need to build something that belongs to me, not something I'm borrowing from someone else's life.
Marcus: I understand that.
Elena: I'm not leaving tomorrow.
I'm not leaving until this is resolved and Leo has a proper transition.
But I want you to know that's the direction I'm moving.
Marcus: Where would you go?
Elena: Rosa lives in Portland.
I've been thinking about Portland for a long time.
I just couldn't go there before because it was too obvious.
Now that Daniel knows where I am anyway, the reason for staying hidden is gone.
I can go somewhere I actually want to be.
Marcus: With Rosa.
Elena: With Rosa.
He was quiet for a moment.
Marcus: Leo is going to miss you.
Elena: I know.
I'm going to miss him too.
The library door opened.
Patricia came back in.
Her expression was the same as always — composed, precise — but there was a particular quality of stillness about her that meant something had shifted.
Patricia: Holt talked.
Marcus: What did he say?
Patricia: He confirmed that Daniel Vasquez retained him six months ago specifically to locate Elena.
He confirmed that he made contact with Victoria through a referral chain that Daniel arranged.
He confirmed that the text last night was sent at Daniel's direction.
Elena: He admitted all of that?
Patricia: He's scared.
He knows what his name on that firm means legally.
He's willing to provide a written statement in exchange for being named as a cooperating witness rather than a co-respondent.
Marcus: Will you take that deal?
Patricia: Yes.
His statement alone is enough to file criminal harassment charges against Daniel Vasquez in this state.
The Arizona motion collapses the moment Daniel is facing charges here.
Elena sat down.
It was a small thing — just sitting down — but Marcus noticed it.
The way the tension went out of her shoulders.
Not completely.
But enough.
Patricia: I'll have the filings ready by end of day.
I'll contact the district attorney's office tomorrow morning.
And I'll reach out to Rosa's local police department this afternoon to ensure she has a formal record on file there as well.
Elena: Thank you, Patricia.
Patricia: Don't thank me yet.
He'll respond.
He'll hire someone better than Holt and he'll file counters and he'll try to make this as long and painful as possible.
Elena: I know.
Patricia: But he's going to lose.
I want you to understand that clearly.
He is going to lose.
She said it the way she said everything — without drama, without performance.
Just the fact of it, stated plainly.
Elena nodded.
Leo made a sound from the portable crib.
Not crying — just announcing himself again, the way he did.
Elena went to him, picked him up, and held him against her shoulder.
He put his hand flat on her cheek the way he sometimes did.
Warm and certain.
She closed her eyes for just a second.
Then she opened them and looked at the room around her — the desk covered in documents, Patricia already typing, Marcus watching his son with an expression that had nothing complicated in it at all.

She was walking out of it — eventually, on her own terms, toward Portland and Rosa and something that would finally be hers — with all of that still true, and none of it mattering the way it used to.
