Chapter 1: The Woman Who Watched From the Doorway

She thought her fake tears would fool her billionaire husband, but she had no idea he was standing right behind the library door the whole time.

The polished oak floors of the grand estate stretched down the long hallway, reflecting the warm light from the crystal fixtures above.

Near the wall, beneath a massive framed painting, the quiet calm of the afternoon shattered in a single second.

Elena stood trembling against the white crown molding, holding little Leo close to her chest.

Victoria took a quick step forward, her face twisted with fury as her gray suit jacket shifted.

Her eyes burned as she reached out to grab the child's carrier.

Victoria: Move out of my way right now!

Elena: Please, ma'am, calm down!

You're scaring him!

Victoria: Don't you dare hold him!

Victoria raised her leg, delivering a sharp kick straight toward Elena.

Elena pulled her body back, wrapping her arms tightly around the small baby held securely in her chest carrier.

She stumbled backward against the wall, her heart hammering as the little boy started to cry soft, terrified tears.

Elena: He's afraid of you right now.

Look at him, he's terrified!

Victoria: He is my son!

You are just a hired maid, and you have no right to keep him away from me!

Elena: I'm keeping him safe!

You aren't in your right mind today, Victoria!

Victoria: Give him to me before I have you thrown in prison for kjdnapping!

Elena: I'm not kjdnapping anyone!

Marcus told me to watch him while he was in the home office!

Victoria: Marcus doesn't control this house!

I am the mother here, and you will obey me!

Heavy footsteps echoed from the far end of the hardwood corridor.

Marcus stepped into the hallway, his dark green suit immaculate, his jaw set in a hard line.

Victoria instantly pulled back her arm, turning toward him with a sudden look of helpless distress, clutching her elbow as if she had been the one att@cked.

Victoria: Marcus!

Thank goodness you're here!

She's trying to turn him against me!

Elena: That's not what happened, Mr.

Vance!

She tried to kick us!

Marcus: Elena, stay right where you are.

Marcus moved closer, his cold gaze fixed entirely on Victoria.

Before she could utter another word of protest, Marcus swung his hand, delivering a hard, sudden sl@p across her face.

Victoria's head jerked back in utter shock as the sharp sound echoed down the long hallway, followed immediately by the infant's sudden, frightened cry.

Victoria: Marcus!

Did you...

did you just h*t me?!

Marcus: Enough.

I saw what you did.

Victoria: You don't understand!

She was holding him back from me!

She was standing between a mother and her child!

Marcus: I walked down the hall two minutes ago, Victoria.

I stood by the library door and watched the whole thing.

Victoria lowered her hand from her reddened cheek, her eyes darting nervously between Marcus and Elena, who was gently swaying side to side to comfort the sobbing baby.

She realized her dramatic act had completely failed to deceive her husband.
