Chapter 7: Everything She Came to Take Back
Serena arrived at seven o'clock exactly.
She was dressed carefully — understated, elegant, the kind of outfit that said *I am not trying too hard* while trying very hard.
She carried a small clutch and no luggage, which meant she intended to stay.
Victor met her in the front room.
He did not offer her a drink.
She sat.
He sat across from her.
"I want to start by apologizing," she said.
"What you saw that night — I know how it looked.
But Ethan had been screaming for forty minutes and I was exhausted and I made a terrible mistake in how I handled it.
I would never intentionally hurt him.
You know that."
Victor said nothing.
She continued.
"Lily has had a problem with me since the beginning.
She's always felt threatened.
The videos — Victor, she filmed me on my worst day, in my worst moment, and she's presenting it as a pattern.
It isn't.
It was one bad night."
"There are eleven videos," Victor said.
"Across three weeks."
A small pause.
"I know that's what she's claiming."
"I've watched them."
Serena's expression shifted — just slightly.
She recalibrated.
"Then you know that none of them show what she's saying they show.
A child being redirected.
A tired woman at the end of her rope.
Nothing criminal.
Nothing that a good lawyer couldn't—"
"Tell me about the Cayman account."
The room went absolutely still.
Serena didn't move.
But something behind her eyes did.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"The holding company registered eight days after our engagement.
The eleven transfers from Ethan's trust.
The power of attorney with my forged signature." Victor's voice was even.
"Tell me about those."
Serena set her clutch down on the cushion beside her.
Very slowly.
Very carefully.
"Victor.
Whatever your accountant has told you, there is an explanation.
The account was set up for tax purposes.
My financial advisor recommended—"
"Your mother is the director of the company."
Silence.
"Four point three million dollars," Victor said.
"Fourteen months.
Structured to stay below audit thresholds." He looked at her.
"This was not a tax strategy."
Serena was quiet for a long moment.
When she spoke again, the warmth was gone.
"You can't prove the signature is forged."
"I already have."
Her jaw tightened.
"A forensic analysis takes months.
You don't have—"
"I have a signed statement from the forensic document examiner.
I have the transaction records.
I have the incorporation documents for the holding company.
And I have two previous fiancés who settled privately rather than go to court." He paused.
"I spoke to both of them this week."
Serena stood up.
"You are making a very serious mistake," she said.
"I have people who will testify that you were an absent father.
That Ethan was neglected under your watch.
That Lily was the one who was unstable and dangerous.
I can make this very complicated for you."
"Sit down, Serena."
"I will not—"
"The financial crimes unit executed a warrant on the Cayman account this morning." Victor's voice didn't change.
"Your mother's assets have been frozen pending investigation.
Your own accounts were flagged an hour ago." He looked at her.
"There is nowhere for this to go that ends well for you.
Sit down."
Serena stood very still.
Then, slowly, she sat.
"What do you want?" she said.
Her voice was different now.
Stripped of everything that had been layered over it.
"I want you to tell me one true thing," Victor said.
"Did you ever care about Ethan at all?"
She looked at him for a long moment.
Then she picked up her clutch and stood again.
"Call your lawyers," she said.
"I'll call mine."
She walked to the door.
"Serena."
She stopped but didn't turn around.
"The recorder was running tonight too."
She left without another word.
The front door closed.
Victor sat alone in the quiet room for exactly one minute.
Then he picked up his phone and called Catherine.
"She confirmed the account," he said.
"On tape."
