Chapter 2: The Deed on the Table

I slipped the bank statements into my pocket and walked back into the dining room.
Melissa was at the head of the table, laughing loudly, refilling wine glasses like she owned the place.
Because in her mind, she did.
"Everyone, this is Derek's little sister," she announced when she saw me.
"She's been away for years.
Nursing.
You know how it is — some people just never quite make it back home."
A few guests smiled politely.
Others looked away.
My mother stood near the kitchen doorway, still holding her cheek.
I pulled out a chair and sat down.
"Actually," I said calmly, "I'm glad everyone's here tonight."
Melissa's smile flickered.
Just for a second.
Derek looked up from his plate.
"This isn't the time," he said quietly.
"It's exactly the time," I said.
I reached into my bag and placed a document flat on the table.
The deed to the house.
My name.
My signature.
My property.
The table went silent.
Melissa stared at it.
Her face didn't go red.
It went white.
"That's...
that's not possible," she whispered.
"Derek told me—"
She stopped herself.
Her eyes shot to my brother.
And that's when I realized.
Derek had told her something.
Something he had no right to say.
Something that explained everything.
What he had told her was worse than anything I had found in that drawer.
