Chapter 2: The Name on the Phone

Richard's hand was shaking.

He had stopped smiling, but he hadn't stopped talking.

"You have no idea what you're doing, old man.

Those documents are signed by a federal judge.

You take her out of this house, and you're finished."

I didn't answer him.

I was still listening to the voice on the satellite phone.

When the call ended, I looked at Richard for a long moment.

"The authorization has been granted," I said quietly.

"You should call your lawyer."

His mother stepped forward from the doorway.

"Richard, what is he talking about?

Who is this man?"

Richard didn't answer her either.

Because Richard had just recognized the name on my phone's agency ID.

A name he had seen once before — on a classified file he was never supposed to access.

His face went pale.

"That's not possible," he whispered.

"You retired."

"I did," I said.

"But they didn't."

Behind me, two vehicles turned into the driveway.

No sirens.

No lights.

Just quiet, deliberate movement.

Lily pressed her face against my shoulder.

The police chief set down his drink.

And Richard's lawyer — the one he had called the moment I arrived — stepped out of the house with his hands already raised.
