Chapter 1: The Man He Thought He Knew
Richard thought I was only his wife's lonely, aging father.
He had no idea who I had been before Lily was born.
On Easter Sunday, she called me weeping.
"Dad, please come get me."
I arrived to find her h*rt on an immaculate white rug while Richard's wealthy family shielded him.
The local police chief was outside enjoying their party.
Richard smiled and warned me that if I took Lily, I would be arrested for kjdnapping.
Then I found her cracked phone beneath the couch.
It was still recording.
His threats, his confession, and the voices of every witness were already preserved.
I carried Lily outside and opened the hidden case beneath my dashboard.
The satellite phone inside connected me to an operation I had left fifteen years earlier.
Richard followed with documents declaring Lily mentally unstable.
He believed the papers made him untouchable.
Then the voice on my phone requested emergency authorization.
Richard finally stopped smiling.
