Chapter 2: The Name at the Top of the Letter

They left twenty minutes later, laughing.

Hannah waited until she heard the car pull away.

Then she sat up, hands shaking, and looked at her thumb.

The ink was still wet.

Florence was already pushing herself up from the floor.

"How long have you known?" Hannah whispered.

"Long enough." The old woman reached under the sofa cushion and pulled out a small voice recorder.

"I started carrying this three weeks ago.

After the second cup of tea."

Hannah stared at it.

"Grandma—"

"There's more." Florence's voice dropped.

"The nursing home Brenda mentioned.

I found a brochure in her bag last week.

She had already circled a room.

She had already written my name on it."

Hannah felt the room tilt.

She looked down at the papers still scattered near the door.

Brenda had taken most of them.

But one sheet had slipped under the edge of the rug.

Hannah picked it up.

It wasn't a transfer form.

It was a letter.

Addressed to someone named Vance Holloway.

And at the bottom, above the signature line, were four words that made her bl00d run cold.

*This was her idea.*

Hannah looked up slowly.

"Grandma…

whose signature is at the top of this letter?"

Florence went very still.

"Read it again," she said quietly.

"Read the date."
