Chapter 1: The Hand That Signed Everything

"Quick, lie down beside me and don't breathe.

When your husband comes in, you'll understand why I'm pretending to be d\*ad."

Hannah Miller froze.

Five seconds earlier, she had rushed into the living room of the old family home in Maplewood and found her grandmother, Florence, lying on the carpet.

She already had her phone ready to call emergency services when the seventy-year-old woman opened her eyes and grabbed her wrist.

"Grandma, what are you doing?"

"Do as I say.

They're coming."

Hannah was thirty-six and worked as a seamstress from home.

For weeks, she had felt that something was wrong with her marriage.

Brandon, her husband of ten years, had started hiding his phone, coming home with flowers for no reason, and becoming nervous whenever she asked about money.

Then Brenda, Brandon's older sister, appeared.

She was a former real estate agent drowning in debt.

She used to visit the house twice a year.

Now she came almost every day, opened the refrigerator as if it belonged to her, and kept saying that the old property was "a fortune going to waste." The house had belonged to Hannah's grandfather and, after the inheritance process, had been left in Florence's and Hannah's names.

The strangest part was Brenda's sudden concern for their grandmother.

"Drink this tea, Grandma Florence.

It's natural.

You'll sleep like a baby."

After drinking it, Florence would fall into a sleep that was far too deep.

One afternoon, she woke up without remembering how she had gotten to her bed.

Two days later, Hannah found the drawer where she kept copies of the property deeds disturbed.

"Did you look through the house papers?" she asked Brandon.

He exploded.

"You're getting just as paranoid as your grandmother!

Now I have to ask permission to touch things in my own house?"

Hannah didn't argue.

That night, she hid the documents.

On Tuesday, a client canceled a dress fitting, and Hannah came home two hours early.

The door was slightly open.

Inside, the air smelled of alcohol, sweet perfume, and something chemical.

She found Florence on the floor.

And now her grandmother was telling her to lie down beside her.

At that moment, they heard the lock turn.

Two people stepped in.

Hannah recognized Brandon's footsteps and Brenda's heels.

"Did they fall for it?" Brenda asked.

"They're both down," Brandon whispered.

"Didn't you use too much?"

"They'll sleep for hours.

Give me the folder."

Brandon knelt beside Hannah.

She held back a scream when she felt her husband lift her hand.

"Forgive me, Hannah," he murmured.

Brenda coated Hannah's thumb with ink and pressed it onto several papers.

Then they did the same with Florence.

"With this and the copied signatures, Vance can prepare the power of attorney and the transfer.

Once it's registered, the house will be ours."

"What if they report us?" Brandon asked.

Brenda let out a dry laugh.

"Hannah doesn't have the money to fight for years.

And we'll put the old woman in a cheap nursing home.

We'll say she has dementia.

In a couple of months, she won't be a problem anymore."

Hannah felt Florence squeeze her elbow to keep her from getting up.

Brandon didn't say no.

That silence was worse than any words.

The man who kissed their daughter every night had just listened to a plan to get rid of his wife's grandmother…

and said nothing.

Hannah still couldn't believe what she was hearing, but what happened next would destroy the family she thought she had forever.

What will Hannah do with the evidence they left on her own hand?
