Chapter 6: The Man Who Kept the Promise

Daniel Mercer waited in a parked taxi outside Bellori.

He was thin, silver-haired, and held an old leather case against his chest.

Tessa opened the car door.

“You helped Elisabetta?”

Daniel looked at her face and began to cry.

“You have her eyes.”

David stepped out of the restaurant.

“Dad, stay in the car.”

Daniel tightened his arms around the case.

“No.”

“You’re confused.”

“I was confused when you said you wanted to return these papers.

I’m not confused now.”

David reached for the case.

Tessa moved between them.

“Do not touch him.”

“He’s my father.”

“He asked you to stay away,” Mateo said.

David pointed at Daniel.

“You cannot trust his memory.

He is eighty-nine.”

Daniel opened the case and removed a notarized statement.

“I remembered enough to have this witnessed twelve years ago.”

Salvatore approached slowly.

“Tell me what happened.”

Daniel faced him.

“Giancarlo paid me to deliver the forged letter to Elisabetta.

I believed it was real.

When I heard him ordering two men to take her child, I confessed.”

“You led her to the ship.”

“Yes.

She took Giancarlo’s pendant so he could never deny I had been in his service.”

Daniel removed a small cassette recorder.

“She made this in Chicago after Margaret was born.

She sent it to me because she feared Giancarlo would find her.”

David snatched for the recorder, but Aaron caught the strap.

“Give it to me,” David shouted.

“No,” Daniel said.

“You stole enough from me.”

David’s face twisted.

“I paid your bills.

I kept you out of a home.”

“You used my weakness to steal Elisabetta’s letters.”

“I was securing our future.”

“You were selling her fear.”

Tessa pressed Play.

Elisabetta’s voice crackled through the small speaker.

“My name is Elisabetta Caruso Vitiello.

Salvatore is Margaret’s father.

Daniel Mercer saved our lives.

If my husband hears this, tell him I did not leave because I stopped loving him.

I left because Giancarlo promised my child would disappear.”

Salvatore gripped Mateo’s shoulder.

David lunged and knocked the recorder from Aaron’s hand.

His shoe came down on the cassette, cracking the plastic.

Daniel gasped.

David stared at the broken pieces.

“Now you have nothing.”

Aaron lifted his phone.

“I streamed every word to cloud storage.”

Two detectives stepped from an unmarked car.

David backed toward Bellori.

“This is a family dispute.”

Detective Lena Ortiz held up a folder.

“Your demand for three million dollars was recorded.

So was your entry into Ms.

Hayes’s apartment.”

“The lease is mine.”

“The signature expert says otherwise,” Mateo replied.

David turned toward Salvatore.

“Make this disappear.

You know how.”

Salvatore took Tessa’s hand.

“No.

She spent her life hiding from men who made things disappear.”

Ortiz placed restraints around David’s wrists.

He stared at Tessa.

“Without me, you would still be carrying plates and knowing nothing.”

Tessa held his gaze.

“Carrying plates was honest work.

Can you say the same about anything you did tonight?”

David was led toward the car.

Daniel bent to gather the broken cassette.

Tessa knelt beside him.

“You kept your promise,” she said.

“Too late.”

“No.

You came when we needed you.”

Daniel opened the pendant with a small pin.

Its metal back lifted away, revealing a strip of paper folded inside.

Mateo read the faded numbers.

“A bank box.”

Daniel nodded.

“Elisabetta said it contained the proof Giancarlo could never reach.”

Salvatore looked at the final line written beneath the number.

May you like

His voice dropped to a whisper.

“It says, ‘For Tessa—when she is ready to know why I chose her.’”
