Chapter 2: The Pendant Around David’s Neck

Tessa’s fingers tightened around the photograph.

“Your wife?”

Salvatore nodded.

“We married in Sicily.

Then Giancarlo told me Elisabetta was gone.”

Mateo pointed to the other young man.

“That’s Giancarlo?”

“My brother,” Salvatore said.

“And the last person seen with her before she disappeared.”

Tessa stepped back.

“My great-grandmother had a husband in America.

She had a family.

She would have told us.”

“Perhaps she was afraid,” Mateo said.

“Afraid of whom?”

Before Salvatore could answer, David appeared in the doorway.

“She needs to leave.”

Mateo’s eyes hardened.

“Why are you still here?”

“I’m protecting my employee.”

“From what?” Tessa demanded.

David said nothing.

Then Tessa remembered his earlier words.

“You knew Salvatore would speak Sicilian.

You also claimed Mateo requested me tonight.”

Mateo slowly faced David.

“I never requested Tessa.”

The room went still.

Tessa’s voice shook.

“Then who put me at Table Four?”

David backed toward the door, but Salvatore caught sight of the gold chain around his neck.

“Stop.”

David froze.

Salvatore pulled a small pendant from beneath David’s collar.

His face turned pale when he saw the symbol engraved on it.

Mateo stared at the pendant.

“That belonged to Giancarlo.”

David’s terrified eyes moved to Tessa.

Then he whispered, “Elisabetta gave it to my father the night she ran.”

Why did David’s family have Giancarlo’s pendant—and what was Elisabetta running from?
