Chapter 2: The Name That Changed Everything

— PART 2 —

Cameron didn't back down.

That was his first mistake.

"I don't know who you are," he said, his voice still smooth, still performing for the room.

"But she's mine.

And I'm taking her home."

No one moved.

No one spoke.

The stranger looked at Cameron the way a man looks at something small that has wandered somewhere it doesn't belong.

"She said no." His voice was quiet.

Almost gentle.

"That's the only answer that matters here."

Cameron's jaw tightened.

"You don't understand the situation."

"I understand it perfectly."

Nora felt the arm around her waist — not gripping, not forcing.

Just there.

A wall between her and the man who had made her afraid for two years.

Cameron took one more step forward.

"Nora.

Don't make this worse."

She felt her hands shake.

But she didn't move.

Then one of the stranger's men leaned down and said something quietly into his ear.

The stranger's expression didn't change.

But something shifted behind his eyes.

He looked at Nora differently now.

Like he had just heard something about her that she hadn't told him yet.

"What's your name?" he asked softly.

"Nora.

Nora Bennett."

A long pause.

"Bennett," he repeated.

Almost to himself.

And for the first time that night, it was the stranger who went very still.

What does he know about Nora's name — and why did it stop him cold?
