Chapter 1: The Night She Ran Out of Options

OMG Nora thought she was hiding from her ex for five minutes, until the mafia boss beneath her quietly asked, "Do you want to go with him?"

She Sat on a Mafia Boss's Lap to Escape Her Abusive Ex—Then He Whispered, "Stay Close.

No One Touches You While You're With Me."

Nora Bennett had two seconds before her abusive ex saw her.

Two seconds before Cameron crossed the underground club, wrapped a hand around her arm, and told everyone she was confused again.

That was his specialty.

He never looked dangerous in public.

He smiled.

Called her sweetheart.

Explained that Nora became emotional sometimes.

Then people helped him take her home.

Tonight, Nora had already run from him once.

She had forty-two dollars, a d*ad disposable phone, one missed bus ticket, and nowhere safe to sleep.

Now Cameron had found her again.

His eyes locked on hers across the crowded club.

He smiled.

Nora ran.

The main exit was behind him.

The service doors were guarded.

Then she spotted the raised VIP section.

Two enormous security men stood beside a velvet rope.

Behind them, several men surrounded a curved leather booth.

Only one was seated.

Dark suit.

Scar through one eyebrow.

Glass of whiskey in his hand.

Everyone else seemed to exist around him.

Nora didn't have time to wonder why.

She slipped past the distracted guards, climbed the three steps, crossed the booth— and dropped directly onto the stranger's lap.

Three men immediately reached inside their jackets.

Nora grabbed the stranger's lapels.

"I'm sorry."

The man beneath her made one tiny motion with his fingers.

Every guard froze.

Then Cameron reached the bottom of the stairs.

"Nora."

Her entire body locked.

"Get up.

Now."

The stranger felt her flinch.

Cameron forced a laugh for the watching room.

"She's my girlfriend.

She gets confused when she's upset.

I just need to take her home."

A broad hand settled lightly at Nora's waist.

The stranger leaned close enough that only she could hear him.

"Do you want to go with him?"

Nora's eyes burned.

"No."

The stranger studied her face.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

His hand immediately left her waist.

Then he looked toward Cameron.

The entire VIP section went silent.

Cameron took another step.

One of the guards blocked him.

For the first time all night, Cameron's confident expression slipped.

The stranger slowly set his whiskey on the table.

He had not raised his voice.

Had not threatened anyone.

But the men around the booth were suddenly watching Cameron as though his next sentence might be extremely expensive.

Will Cameron back down — or push his luck with the wrong man?
