Chapter 2: The Envelope She Was Never Meant to Receive
Two men in dark suits pushed through the chapel doors.
Helena took one step back.
Her heel caught the edge of a floral arrangement and she grabbed the nearest pew to steady herself.
"That phone belongs to me," she said.
"Bia doesn't understand what she found."
Ricardo didn't move.
"Then you won't mind if we listen to it together."
The room went completely still.
Bia pressed the phone against her chest and looked up at Ricardo.
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
"Mama said if anything happened to her, I had to keep it safe.
She said don't give it to Helena.
She said don't give it to anyone except you."
Helena's expression shifted.
Something behind her eyes changed — not grief, not shock.
Calculation.
"She was confused at the end," Helena said quietly.
"She didn't know what she was saying."
"She knew exactly what she was saying." The voice came from the back of the chapel.
Everyone turned.
An older woman stood near the entrance, still in her coat, a sealed envelope held in both hands.
"I was her neighbor for eleven years," the woman said.
"She gave me this three weeks ago.
She told me to open it if she d*ed before her time."
Helena's face went white.
The woman looked directly at Ricardo.
"She told me her sister would try to stop it from reaching you."
