Chapter 5: What Claire Did When She Thought No One Was Watching

I brought the children home the following afternoon.

Lily walked carefully, favoring her left side.

She held my hand through the parking lot and didn't let go until we were inside the front door.

Claire was not in the house.

Her closet was open.

Several things were gone — not packed, taken.

Gaps where her good shoes had been.

The vanity drawer pulled out and left that way.

She had come back while we were at the hospital and taken what she wanted.

Lily stood in the hallway and looked at the open closet door.

"Is Mommy gone?"

I crouched down to her level.

"Mommy needs some time away.

You and Noah are staying here with me."

Lily considered this with the particular seriousness of a seven-year-old who has already learned that some questions don't get full answers.

"Is she coming back?"

"I don't know yet, sweetheart."

She nodded slowly.

Then she walked to the couch, sat down, and asked if she could watch television.

I said yes.

I went to the kitchen and called my attorney, a woman named Grace Holloway, who had handled evidence-based family cases for nineteen years and who I had referred three colleagues to over the years.

She picked up on the second ring.

"Daniel.

I've been expecting your call."

"How much do you already know?"

"Enough.

You forwarded me the evidence file at two in the morning.

I've been reading since six." A pause.

"This is a strong case.

The financial records alone are significant.

Combined with the camera footage and the medical documentation — Daniel, this is not a close call."

"What's my first move?"

"Freeze the accounts.

All of them.

I can file for an emergency financial restraining order today.

Given the documented transfer pattern and the threat message, a judge will grant it."

"Do it."

"I'll need you in my office tomorrow morning.

Bring the original devices."

"They're already sealed."

"Of course they are." I could hear her almost smile.

"One more thing.

The man — Vale.

Do you want to keep this civil, or are you prepared for it to go further?"

I watched Lily through the kitchen doorway.

She had pulled a blanket over her shoulders and was sitting very still, watching the screen with the careful attention of a child who is working hard to feel normal.

"How much further can it go?"

"Potentially a great deal further.

What he coached her to do meets the threshold for criminal conspiracy to commit financial fraud.

The threat message adds another layer.

If your office were handed this file on a stranger's desk, what would you do with it?"

"I'd open a case."

"Then you have your answer."

I hung up and stood at the kitchen window.

My phone buzzed again.

Claire this time.

*I need you to understand that I didn't want it to go this way.

I was unhappy for a long time and I didn't know how to tell you.

Marcus helped me see that I had options.

I'm not a bad person, Daniel.

I just needed a way out.*

I read it twice.

Then I typed back: *Your attorney will be in contact with Grace Holloway.

Please do not contact me directly again.*

Three minutes later, a different message arrived.

Not from Claire.

From Diane.

*You need to drop this, Daniel.

You're destroying this family.

Claire made mistakes but she's still the mother of your children.

If you pursue this, I will tell everyone what kind of husband you really were.

I have things I can say.*

My hand went still on the phone.

I had been prepared for Marcus to fight.

May you like

I had been prepared for Claire to deflect.

I had not fully calculated Diane.
