Chapter 2: The Message She Never Meant Him to See

Part 2 ⬇️

It was past midnight when Claire walked through the front door.

She stopped when she saw me sitting at the kitchen table.

"Daniel?

Why are you home?

I thought—"

"Sit down, Claire."

Something in my voice made her obey without arguing.

She set her purse on the counter and lowered herself into the chair across from me.

Her red dress still smelled like someone else's cologne.

"The children are at the hospital," I said.

Her face shifted.

"What?

Why?

What happened?"

"Lily has bruising across both shoulders from carrying Noah for six hours.

She's seven years old, Claire."

"I — Diane was supposed to—"

"Diane left at 4:12.

I have the footage."

The color drained from her face.

"The cameras," I said quietly, "were never off."

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Her hands gripped the edge of the table.

Then her phone lit up on the counter between us.

A message preview.

One line visible before the screen dimmed.

*Marcus: Did he find out?

Call me.

The transfer needs to happen tonight.*

Claire lunged for the phone.

I was faster.

What I read in those messages was worse than anything I had seen on the camera footage.

Because this had been planned — not for weeks.

For over a year.
