Chapter 2: Her First Word Wasn't Dad

Part 2 ⬇️
I sat at the kitchen table until 3 a.m., going through every transaction line by line.
Forty-two transfers.
Small enough not to trigger an alert.
Large enough to hurt.
My wife had been moving money for eight months.
I didn't cry.
I just closed the laptop and looked at my hands — the same hands she said would embarrass Sabrina at her own wedding.
The next morning, I heard them in the kitchen.
Laughing.
Her biological father was already there, sitting in my chair, drinking coffee from my pot.
"The venue deposit clears today," my wife said.
"Once the mortgage goes through, we're done here."
He nodded.
"And he won't fight it?"
She laughed.
"He doesn't even know how any of it works."
I stepped into the doorway.
All three of them went quiet.
I looked at Sabrina — really looked at her — and she turned away first.
"I just came to say congratulations," I said.
"I hope the wedding goes exactly as planned."
I walked back to my workshop and made one phone call.
By noon, the venue manager had received a letter from my trust attorney.
The venue was mine.
The wedding could not proceed without my written consent.
My phone rang twenty minutes later.
It was Sabrina.
Her first word wasn't Dad.
