Chapter 2: What the Camera Caught

The bl00dwork results came back while I was still in the hospital bed, my husband's hand wrapped around mine so tight it hurt.
The doctor didn't look at me when he spoke.
He looked at my husband.
"We found traces of a substance that shouldn't be in her system.
Something that causes early labor."
My husband stood up slowly.
"How would it get there?"
"It would have to be ingested.
In food or drink."
I thought about the cookout.
The plate my mother had handed me personally.
The lemonade she'd refilled twice, smiling the whole time.
My husband walked out of the room without a word.
When he came back twenty minutes later, his face was white.
"I called your cousin.
She didn't just film the kick." His voice broke.
"She filmed the whole afternoon.
Including who went into the kitchen.
Including who was alone with your food."
I couldn't speak.
"There's something else." He set his phone on the bed so I could see the screen.
A text message.
Sent from my mother's number to my sister.
Sent three days before the cookout.
It said: *Make sure it happens before the 15th.*

My daughter's trust locked in permanently on the 16th.
And then the hospital room door opened — and the last person I ever expected walked in.
