Chapter 4: The Man Who Arrived Too Calm

Mateo walked into the hospital at 5:31 a.m.

He was wearing the same clothes from the club — dark shirt, expensive watch, the faint smell of mezcal still clinging to him.

His hair was pushed back.

His eyes were clear in a way that did not match someone who had been drinking for hours.

That was the first thing Alejandro noticed.

The second was that Mateo did not ask which floor.

He walked directly to the surgical wing without stopping at the information desk.

Alejandro stepped into his path before he reached the doors.

"How did you know which floor?"

Mateo stopped.

"What?"

"You didn't ask at the desk.

You came straight here.

How did you know where she was?"

Something moved behind Mateo's eyes.

Fast.

Gone before it fully formed.

"I called ahead.

From the car."

"You called who?"

"The hospital.

Obviously." Mateo's jaw tightened.

"Are you going to let me through, or are you going to keep treating me like a suspect in my own wife's accident?"

"I'm going to ask you one question first." Alejandro didn't move.

"Who else knew Camila was alone in the house last night?"

"No one.

She was home.

I was out.

That's not a secret."

"Your housekeeper had the night off.

Your driver was with you.

Your security guard called in sick — which, I checked, he has never done before in four years of employment." Alejandro watched Mateo's face carefully.

"Three people all absent on the same night.

Does that seem like coincidence to you?"

"People get sick.

People take nights off."

"On the same night.

The same night you had your phone on airplane mode.

The same night Camila fell." Alejandro took one step closer.

"The same night someone used Valeria's access code to lock the gate from outside."

Mateo's chin came up.

"You have no proof of anything."

"I have the gate log.

I have the access record.

I have seventeen missed calls on a cracked phone that I personally picked up off your marble floor." Alejandro's voice stayed level.

"What I don't have yet is a reason.

But I'm starting to understand the shape of one."

"You're out of your mind." Mateo's voice rose just enough to draw a glance from a passing orderly.

He lowered it again immediately.

"My wife had an accident.

She fell.

It happens.

She was eight months pregnant and she got up in the middle of the night and she fell.

That is all this is."

"Then why did you ask me if the baby was yours?

Before you asked if she was alive?"

Mateo said nothing.

"That was the first question out of your mouth, Mateo.

Not *is she breathing*.

Not *how bad is it*.

You asked if the baby was yours." Alejandro let the silence do its work.

"A man who had nothing to do with what happened last night doesn't ask that question first."

The surgical doors opened at the far end of the corridor.

A doctor in scrubs walked toward them, mask pulled down, expression unreadable.

Both men turned.

"Family of Camila Reyes?" the doctor said.

Mateo stepped forward.

"I'm her husband."

The doctor looked at him for a moment.

Then at Alejandro.

Then back.

"The mother is stable.

She's out of immediate danger."

Mateo exhaled.

"And the baby?" Alejandro asked.

The doctor's expression shifted — not quite grief, not quite relief.

Something in between that made the air in the corridor feel suddenly heavier.

"The baby is alive," she said carefully.

"But there are complications we need to discuss.

And I need to speak with someone who has medical decision-making authority." She looked directly at Mateo.

"Are you prepared to make those decisions tonight, Mr.

Reyes?"

Mateo opened his mouth.

May you like

Alejandro watched him.

And for just a fraction of a second — less than a breath — Mateo hesitated.
