Chapter 2: Six Names on a List

I didn't yell.
I didn't slam her door.
I just looked at her and said, "You broke something that belonged to my mother.
I want you to know that."
She shrugged.
Actually shrugged.
"Things break.
That's what happens when you use old equipment."
I walked home, sat down at my kitchen table, and looked at the mixer for a long time.
Then I picked up my phone.
The first call I made was to an appliance repair shop two towns over.
The man there told me what I already suspected — the motor was damaged.
Repairable, but not cheap.
The second call I made was to my neighbor on the other side, Linda.
"Has Denise ever borrowed anything from you?" I asked.
There was a pause.
"Honey," Linda said slowly, "she returned my good casserole dish in three pieces and told me it must have had a crack in it already."
That was when I understood this wasn't carelessness.
This was a pattern.
I started making a list.
Every item.
Every date I could remember.
Every neighbor I could think of.
By the time my daughter came home from work, I had six names on that list.
And then my daughter said something that stopped me cold.
"Mom…
did you know Denise has been telling people you gave her that mixer?"
