Chapter 2: The Message Nobody Was Supposed to Send

Part 2 ⬇️
The room didn't move.
Nobody breathed.
Then Evelyn's husband, Gerald, reached over and took my phone.
He pressed play again.
Louder this time.
"…just get rid of her.
Once Daniel's mother is out of the picture, everything goes to us…"
A woman gasped.
Someone whispered Gerald's name.
Gerald set the phone down on the table like it was made of glass.
"Evelyn." His voice was barely above a whisper.
"Who is that man?"
Evelyn's face collapsed.
"It's not what you—"
"Who.
Is.
He."
She said nothing.
And that silence answered everything.
I looked at Daniel.
He was staring at his mother like he was seeing her for the first time.
His arms had dropped.
His face had gone pale.
Then his aunt — the one who'd nodded along while Evelyn dragged me across the floor — stood up and walked out without a word.
One by one, chairs scraped back.
Gerald picked up his keys.
"Gerald, please—" Evelyn reached for his arm.
He stepped back.
"Don't."
That's when my phone buzzed on the table.
A message.
From a number I didn't recognize.
*She knows you have more.
Don't play the second recording.*
I hadn't told anyone there was a second recording.
---
Someone in that room sent that message — and they were still watching.
What does the second recording reveal, and who is trying to stop it from coming out?
