Chapter 1: The Woman Who Pressed Play

My mother-in-law dragged me by the hair, sl\*pped me in front of her whole family, and called me a thief.
My husband said nothing.
She thought she'd silenced me.
But she didn't know I'd recorded her secret.
And when I pressed play, it wasn't my voice that destroyed her—it was another man's.
I was washing dishes when Evelyn seized my hair and dragged me across the tiles.
My knees burned.
Soapy water dripped from my hands as I fell before everyone.
My husband Daniel watched.
Arms folded.
Silent.
"She st\*le \$500!" Evelyn screamed.
"Caught her red-handed!"
I knew the truth.
Yesterday I'd overheard her—something she'd kjll to keep hidden.
She was attacking me first to discredit me.
"Admit it!" She sl\*pped me.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
So I stood up.
Wiped the bl\*\*d from my lip.
And laughed.
"You wanted everyone to judge me?" I pulled out my phone.
"Fine.
Let them hear what you really sound like."
I pressed play.
Evelyn's voice.
Whispering to another man.
Confessing.
Planning.
Everything I'd overheard.
Not her husband.
Another man.
Gasps exploded across the room.
Evelyn shrieked and lunged.
But her husband stepped between us.
He didn't look at me.
He looked at her.
And in that silence, Evelyn realized she'd destroyed herself.
