Chapter 2: The Name She Should Not Know

Nobody moved.

My husband stood over his mother, his jaw tight, his hands still shaking.

She looked up from the floor and said the one thing none of us expected.

"I was protecting her.

That baby would have had a better life."

The nurse called for security.

Two staff members appeared in the doorway.

My mother-in-law scrambled to her feet and grabbed the edge of the bassinet.

"You have two.

My daughter has been crying for years.

You're selfish.

You've always been selfish."

My husband stepped forward.

"Don't touch that bassinet again."

"She deserves a child more than this girl does."

I finally found my voice.

"Get her out."

Security moved toward her.

I felt the bl00d leave my face.

My husband saw my expression.

"What did she say?"

I couldn't answer.

Because what she whispered wasn't a threat.

It was a name.

A name I had never told anyone.

Not even him.

What did she whisper — and how does she know that name?
