Chapter 1: The Bracelet

My mother-in-law abruptly took one of my newborn daughters from the bassinet and carried the crying baby toward my sister-in-law.
"You have three.
My daughter has none.
She gets this one."
I reached desperately toward them from the hospital bed, but my IV line pulled tight against my wrist.
My husband immediately stepped between them, took the newborn safely from his mother, and brought her back to my side.
Then our six-year-old son pointed at the baby's partly opened identification band.
"Dad…
that isn't our baby.
Grandma opened the bracelet."
My mother-in-law lunged toward the bassinet.
My husband blocked her and delivered one sharp open-handed sl\*p across her face.
Her head snapped sideways.
She staggered backward into a hospital chair, the chair rolled away, and she fell heavily onto the floor.
The nurse stepped between her and the bassinets, raised the identification scanner, and scanned the newborn's electronic tag.
She froze.
"This band has been opened."
My husband slowly turned toward his mother.

What happens when he looks at her?

Will she confess what she was really trying to do?
