Chapter 2: The Card He Thought He Had

My father didn't raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
He stepped into the room, and the air changed.
Julian's hand slowly released my arm.
"Who are you?" Julian said, trying to sound confident.
My father looked at him the way a man looks at something small and dangerous — not afraid, just certain.
"I'm her father."
Julian straightened.
"This is a family matter.
It doesn't involve you."
"You have your hand on my daughter's arm." My father's voice was completely calm.
"That makes it my matter."
Julian's jaw tightened.
He glanced at the nurses, then back at my father, calculating.
"She needs to come home.
We have bills.
Responsibilities."
"She has two broken legs."
"That's not my problem."
The room went completely still.
My father walked to the side of my bed.
He looked at Chloe's drawing.
He looked at my casts.
He looked at the monitor still racing beside me.
Then he turned back to Julian.
"I've spent thirty years protecting people from men like you." His voice dropped lower.
"And I have never once lost."
Julian took one step back.
But then his phone buzzed.
He looked down at the screen — and something shifted in his face.
Not fear.
Something worse.
Relief.
Like someone had just told him he still had a card left to play.
