Chapter 1: The Man Who Came to Collect

My husband stepped into my hospital room after my near-fatal car accident—not to comfort me, but to demand that I get out of bed and stop costing him money.

He tried to drag my broken body home until the door opened and he came face-to-face with the one man he never should have challenged: my father, a hidden special operations officer.

The heart monitor beside me kept screaming as Julian tightened his grip on my arm.

"Get up, Audrey," he said coldly.

"I'm done paying for this.

I'm not letting you stay here another day."

I stared at him from my hospital bed, unable to believe the man standing in front of me was my husband of eleven years.

My legs were trapped in heavy casts from my thighs to my feet.

My ribs were fractured, stitches covered the wound beneath my hair, and every breath reminded me of the crash that nearly took my life.

Three weeks earlier, my ordinary afternoon had turned into twisted metal, shattered glass, flashing ambulance lights, and a desperate fight to survive.

I spent twenty-one days waiting for Julian to walk through those hospital doors.

I imagined him holding my hand.

Bringing me clothes.

Telling me he was grateful I was still alive.

Instead, he arrived furious.

"This is enough, Audrey," he snapped.

"You've turned this into a nightmare.

We're going home."

"Julian…

I can't."

"Don't start with excuses."

"My legs are broken."

He looked at my casts like they were an inconvenience instead of proof that I had almost d*ed.

For years, I had sacrificed everything for our family.

After our daughter Chloe was born, Julian convinced me to leave my accounting career behind.

He told me a good mother stayed home, so I buried my dreams and devoted myself to our daughter, our house, and our marriage.

"I gave up my whole life for this family," I whispered.

"You're my husband.

You're supposed to protect me."

His expression didn't change.

"You're making everything harder."

Then he reached down, grabbed my arm, and tried to pull me out of the bed.

A wave of pain tore through my ribs.

The monitor beside me began racing.

"Get up," he demanded.

For the first time in years, I looked him straight in the eyes.

"No."

The word was quiet, but it stopped him.

Julian had never expected me to fight back.

The alarms filled the room as nurses rushed closer, and he still didn't understand that everything he had done was being recorded.

His name was in the visitor log.

My injuries were documented.

Every doctor's warning was written in my medical records.

Then I looked at Chloe's drawing taped beside my bed.

*"Come home soon, Mommy."*

I remembered my promise to her.

I remembered fighting through the wreckage.

I remembered refusing to give up.

Julian stepped toward me again.

But before he could speak, the hospital door slowly opened.

A tall man in a dark military uniform stood there.

My father.

The man Julian believed was nothing more than a quiet, retired officer.

The man who had hidden his true identity for years.

A highly trained special operations officer who had spent his life protecting people from the shadows.

His eyes moved from my broken legs to Julian's hand still wrapped around my arm.

The entire room went silent.

Because Julian had just discovered the one person he should have never underestimated.

My father was finally home.
