Chapter 2: What Was in the Folder

Part 2 ⬇️

Nobody moved.

The legal officer was still on the line.

I could hear him breathing.

"There's something else," he said.

"The transfer was authorized.

Digitally signed."

"By who?"

A pause.

"By you."

The room tilted.

I grabbed the edge of the table.

"That's not possible.

I never signed anything."

Grant set down his wine glass slowly.

"Didn't you?" he said.

"Think carefully, sweetheart."

His mother touched her pearls and smiled at me the way you smile at someone who has already lost.

"We gave you every chance to leave quietly," she said.

"You chose to stay.

So now you carry this."

My mind raced back.

The documents Grant had handed me three weeks ago.

He'd said they were insurance updates.

I'd signed without reading.

I'd trusted him.

I'd trusted him.

A door opened behind me.

I turned.

A man I didn't recognize stepped into the dining room.

He was carrying a leather folder.

He looked at Grant and gave one small nod.

Grant finally stood up from his chair.

"The second transfer processes in four hours," he said quietly.

"And there's nothing frozen that can stop it."

I looked at the stranger.

Then at Grant.

Then at his mother, still smiling.

And I realized — the $63.4 million wasn't what they were really after.
