Chapter 1: The Price of Staying

"My Husband Smashed a Porcelain Plate Against My Head at a Blackwood Family Dinner and Said, "That's the price you have to pay." His Mother Smiled and Told Me to Know My Place.

They Expected Me to Cry.

Instead, I Picked Up My Phone and Froze Every Account Their Family Controlled.

Grant's smile disappeared.

"What the hell did you just do?"

"I made sure none of you can move another dollar."

For years, the Blackwoods believed their name made them untouchable.

Then the company's chief legal officer called me back.

His voice was tight.

"The accounts are frozen."

I exhaled.

Then he continued.

"But the money you were trying to protect is gone."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"How much?"

"$63.4 million."

The entire dining room went cold.

"When was it moved?"

"Forty-eight hours ago."

I slowly turned toward Grant.

And that was when I understood.

He wasn't afraid.

He was smiling.

The attack hadn't been the beginning of their plan.

It had been their celebration.

And if the money trail was telling the truth, the Blackwood empire might never have belonged to them at all."
