Chapter 2: The Man Who Called

David heard the truck before he saw it.

He pushed past two executives and pressed his face against the window.

The Porsche was already halfway up the ramp.

"What the—" He spun around, card in hand, and tried to call his driver.

Declined.

He tried the company account.

Declined.

That's when he looked at his phone.

The termination email.

His own face in the footage.

Every executive in the room had already seen it.

The silence was different now.

No more nervous laughter.

No more polite shoes-staring.

Just cold, flat looks from men who had watched him hjt me twenty minutes ago and said nothing — and were now calculating how fast they could distance themselves.

"This is a mistake," David said.

"Someone call legal."

No one moved.

He turned to me as I stepped back into the room.

"You did this." His voice dropped to something I'd never heard before.

"You actually did this."

I looked at him calmly.

"The house deed is in my name, David.

It always was."

He took one step toward me — and the senior VP from the firm's board stepped directly between us.

"Mr.

Hartley." His voice was quiet and final.

"I'd strongly suggest you don't finish that step."

David's face went white.

And then his personal phone rang.

He looked at the screen — and whatever he saw there made him sit down slowly, like something inside him had just collapsed.

I still don't know who called him.

But I know what it meant.

What David found out in that phone call changed everything — and what I discovered about him the next morning was worse than any of it.
