Chapter 7: The Door She Could Not Cross

Tessa stepped between my bed and the doorway.
“Darlene is not authorized to enter.”
The social worker checked her tablet.
“She presented a temporary care authorization.”
“It contains a forged signature,” I said.
Paige handed over her phone.
“And this explains why it was created.”
The recording played while another contraction tightened across my body.
The social worker listened without speaking.
When it ended, she looked at Tessa.
“May I send this to hospital counsel?”
“Yes.”
A nurse adjusted the monitor.
“Maren, stay with me.
Breathe slowly.”
Footsteps sounded outside.
Darlene’s voice rose beyond the closed door.
“I have legal authorization.
My granddaughter needs me.”
The social worker opened the door but blocked the entrance.
“Mrs.
Whitlock, this document has been challenged.
You must leave the maternity floor.”
Darlene saw Paige beside my bed.
“You gave them the recording.”
“Yes,” Paige said.
“After everything I’ve done for you?”
“You mean everything you decided for me.”
Grant appeared behind Darlene.
“Mom, stop.”
She wheeled toward him.
“You caused this by confessing.”
“No.
You caused it by lying.”
“You paid Evelyn.”
“And I’ll answer for that.”
Darlene tried to step around the social worker.
Two security officers moved into the hallway.
I pushed myself upright.
“You will not be present when Nora is born.”
Darlene’s face twisted.
“You need me.”
“I needed a mother-in-law who respected me.”
“You’ll come crawling back after three sleepless nights.”
“No,” Paige said.
“She’ll call me.”
The officers escorted Darlene toward the elevator.
She kept looking back until the doors closed.
A man in a gray suit approached Grant.
“Mr.
Whitlock?
I’m Investigator Hale.
We need to discuss the signature and the transfers.”
Grant looked through the doorway at me.
“Can I see my daughter first?”
“Tell him everything first,” I said.
Grant took out his phone and handed it to the investigator.
“My mother told me to erase our messages.
I didn’t.”
Investigator Hale scrolled through the screen.
“Does this include the instructions sent to Celia Voss?”
“Yes.”
“Did Mrs.
Whitlock know her signature had been used?”
“No.”
Grant’s shoulders dropped.
“I knew it was wrong.
I let fear make me cruel.”
I looked at him through the open doorway.
“No.
Fear asked you a question.
You chose your answer.”
A nurse closed the door as another contraction came.
Hours later, Paige held my hand while Tessa waited near the window.
When Nora finally cried, every argument outside that room disappeared beneath one clear, furious sound.
The nurse placed her against my chest.
“Hello, Nora Elise,” I whispered.
Paige covered her mouth as tears ran down her face.
“She has your chin.”
“She has Grandma Nora’s stubborn entrance.”
Tessa laughed softly.
“Her paperwork will show the name you chose.”
The social worker returned carrying a clean set of discharge forms.
“You remain the sole medical decision-maker,” she said.
“Darlene’s document has been removed and preserved as evidence.”
“Thank you.”
“There is one more thing.
Grant has requested a supervised visit.”
I looked down at Nora’s closed eyes.
“Not tonight.”
The social worker nodded.
“Then no one enters.”
Outside, Investigator Hale stopped Darlene before she could leave the building.
Through the window in my door, I watched him show her a printed copy of Grant’s messages.
Darlene looked toward my room and said one sentence loud enough for me to hear.
“Maren has taken my whole family.”
Paige squeezed my hand.
May you like
“No,” she said.
“You finally stopped her from taking yours.”
