Chapter 2: The Blue Folder

I pulled over and called Grant.

“What did you pay for?”

“Come home.

I’ll explain everything.”

“No.

Tell me now.”

He was silent long enough to frighten me.

“The money wasn’t for Mom and Dad,” he finally said.

“Their account was only used to move it.”

“Move it where?”

Before he could answer, another call appeared.

Paige.

I switched lines.

“Maren, don’t go home,” she whispered.

“Why?”

“Grant left Dad’s house right after you.

He took the blue folder from Mom’s desk.”

“What folder?”

Paige started crying.

“The one with your hospital forms.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What was on them?”

“I only saw one page.

Your name was at the top, but the signature at the bottom wasn’t yours.”

A cold wave passed through me.

“Who signed it?”

Before Paige could answer, someone spoke behind her.

“Give me that phone.”

Darlene.

The call ended.

Seconds later, Paige sent me a photograph.

It showed a document labeled **TEMPORARY CARE AUTHORIZATION**.

Darlene’s name appeared beneath mine.

Then Grant called again.

“Maren, where are you?”

“Why is your mother named on a care document for Nora?”

He stopped breathing.

“You weren’t supposed to see that.”

My stomach turned.

“Grant, what did you do?”

His answer came quietly.

“I was trying to make sure the baby stayed with my family.”

Then someone knocked hard on my car window.
