Chapter 1: One Red Heel

**MY HUSBAND OPENED MY PRIVATE HOSPITAL-ROOM DOOR—AND CAUGHT ISABELLA STANDING OVER ME WITH ONE RED HEEL PRESSED AGAINST MY BODY**
My husband opened the door to my private hospital room...
and found Isabella standing over me.
One red heel was pressed against my body while I lay helplessly on the marble floor, both arms wrapped around my seven-month pregnant belly.
"KHLOE!"
Isabella's face turned ghost-white.
The instant she heard Marcus's voice, she yanked her foot away and stumbled backward.
I could barely breathe.
Pain burned through my body as I tried to protect my unborn child.
Marcus rushed toward me.
But Isabella recovered almost immediately.
She pointed at me.
Then she forced tears into her eyes.
"SHE FELL!"
Her voice trembled perfectly.
"I was only trying to help her!"
Marcus stopped.
His eyes moved from me...
to Isabella's red heel...
then slowly back to Isabella's face.
She stepped toward him and reached for his hand.
"Marcus, please.
Just listen to me—"
**SL\*P!**
The sound cracked through the room.
Marcus had str*ck her across the face.
"DON'T YOU DARE LIE TO ME!"
Isabella stumbled sideways and collided with the table.
She stood there in stunned silence.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then something changed.
The tears disappeared from Isabella's face.
The frightened expression vanished.
Her eyes slowly traveled upward.
Toward the far corner of the ceiling.
And all the color drained from her face.
A tiny red light was blinking.
A security camera.
It had been there the entire time.
Marcus hadn't noticed it.
But Isabella had.
And the terror spreading across her face told me something was very wrong.
She wasn't afraid of the sl*p.
She wasn't even afraid of Marcus anymore.
She was afraid of the recording.
Whatever that camera had captured...
it was clearly far worse than what Marcus had just seen with his own eyes.
Marcus followed my gaze.
His expression changed.
"What's wrong?"
Isabella said nothing.
She couldn't.
Her eyes remained fixed on the tiny blinking light.
I watched her face.
And for the first time, I understood.
Marcus hadn't walked in at the beginning.
He had walked in at the end.
Something had happened before that door opened.
Something Isabella desperately needed the camera to not have recorded.
Something she never expected anyone to see.
Marcus stepped closer to the wall.
Then he looked back at Isabella.
"What did you do before I came in?"
Isabella's lips parted.
No answer came.
The camera continued blinking silently above us.
Recording everything.
Every movement.
Every word.
Every second Isabella thought nobody was watching.
And suddenly, the question wasn't whether Isabella had att*cked me.
The question was much worse.
**What else had that camera seen?**
