Chapter 1: The Woman in the White Dress

My husband invited his secretary on our honeymoon, so I let them board the plane without me.

My husband insisted on bringing his secretary along on our honeymoon just moments before we boarded.

I smiled, wished them a wonderful flight, and quietly walked away.

It wasn't until their plane landed in Hawaii that he realized his brand-new wife had never been on it — and the message waiting on his phone changed everything.

The departure terminal at JFK buzzed with travelers rushing toward their gates, rolling suitcases clattering across the polished floor.

I stood beside my new husband, Julian, at the check-in counter, my hand resting lightly on his arm.

We had been married less than twenty-four hours.

This was supposed to be the beginning of our honeymoon in Maui.

Just as the airline agent reached for our passports, Julian cleared his throat.

"Clara…

there's something I need to tell you." He avoided my eyes while straightening the sleeve of his tailored jacket.

"Sienna has an important business report that can't wait.

She'll be flying with us so we can work during the trip." I remained perfectly still.

Then I watched Sienna appear through the crowd.

She wore a flowing white dress that looked far too bridal for someone claiming to be on a business trip, and she rolled an expensive suitcase almost identical to mine.

"Oh, Clara," she said with a practiced smile.

"I'm so sorry to interrupt your honeymoon." Her words sounded polite.

Her eyes said something entirely different.

For months I had pictured this trip differently: breakfast overlooking the ocean, walks after sunset, and the small, ordinary conversations we had missed while preparing for the wedding.

I had saved the reservation confirmations, checked the room details twice, and even tucked a note into Julian's carry-on to surprise him after takeoff.

Sienna knew all of it because she had helped him organize his work calendar.

Now she stood beside us as though she were a guest I should be grateful to include.

I searched Julian's face for the smallest sign that he understood how humiliating this was.

He only glanced at the departure board and asked whether we would miss boarding.

That was the moment my embarrassment changed into certainty.

I did not need another argument about boundaries.

I needed to see what he would do when the woman he had married stopped quietly accepting second place.

Julian slipped an arm around my waist, silently urging me not to cause a scene.

So I smiled.

"It's fine," I replied softly.

"Business comes first." The tension instantly disappeared from his face.

Sienna eagerly handed over her passport.

While both of them focused on the airline agent, I unlocked my phone inside my coat pocket.

Every reservation had been booked under my account.

Within seconds, I opened the airline app…

Selected my ticket…

And canceled only my seat.

Refund confirmed.

I slipped my phone away before anyone noticed.

As we approached security, I smiled again.

"I need to stop by the restroom," I told them.

"You two go ahead." The moment they disappeared beyond the checkpoint…

I turned around.

Walked straight out of the terminal.

Called a taxi.

And headed back to my apartment in Manhattan.

Meanwhile, Julian and Sienna boarded a flight they assumed we were taking together.

Neither of them realized I wasn't on it.

Eleven hours later…

Their plane touched down in Maui.

Julian unlocked the door to the luxurious oceanfront suite reserved for our honeymoon.

The room was immaculate.

Beautiful.

And completely empty.

No luggage.

No clothes.

No sign that his wife had ever arrived.

A knot of unease settled in his stomach.

Then his phone vibrated.

A text message from an unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.

*Happy honeymoon, Julian.

I hope the trip is everything you imagined.*

*I decided that sharing my honeymoon with your secretary wasn't part of my wedding vows.* He frowned and kept reading.

*One small detail I forgot to mention before your flight…*

As his eyes reached the next sentence…

The color drained from his face.

Because what I had done before leaving the airport was something he had never considered possible.

What exactly did Clara's message say — and what had she already set in motion before that plane ever left the ground?
