Chapter 2: Check the Second Account

Part 2 ⬇️

I stood there with bl0od still warm on my temple and $63.4 million gone.
Grant straightened his jacket like nothing had happened.
"You were never supposed to have access to those accounts," he said quietly.
"Did you really think I married you for love?"
His mother set down her wine glass.
"Clean yourself up.
You're embarrassing the family."
I didn't cry.
I didn't move.
I looked at Grant and said, "Who helped you move it?"
He smiled again.
That same slow, satisfied smile.
"Does it matter?"
It did.
Because forty-eight hours ago I had been the only person with the transfer authorization codes.
Someone inside had given them to him.
Someone I trusted.
I looked around the table.
His brother wouldn't meet my eyes.
His family's lawyer was staring at his phone.
And then I noticed the one empty chair.
Margaret.
Grant's personal assistant.
The woman who had worked beside me for three years.
Her seat was empty.
Her coat was gone.
I looked at Grant.
"Where is Margaret?"
His smile didn't change.
But something behind his eyes shifted.
"She had somewhere to be tonight."
That was when my phone buzzed.
One message.
No name.
Just four words.
