Chapter 1: The Price of the Plate

My husband hurled a porcelain plate against my head at a Blackwood family dinner.
Then he looked at me and said, "That's the price you have to pay."
His mother smiled and told me to know my place.
They expected tears.
Instead, I picked up my phone and froze every account their family controlled.
Grant's smile vanished.
Then the company's chief legal officer called me back.
"The accounts are frozen," he said.
For one second, I thought I had stopped them.
Then he added, "But the money you were trying to protect is gone."
$63.4 million.
Moved forty-eight hours earlier.
I turned toward Grant.
He wasn't afraid anymore.
He was smiling.
That was when I realized the att@ck wasn't the start of their plan.
It was their celebration.
