Chapter 2: The Bag He Packed Before She Was Born

Security took Luke into the hallway.
I couldn't follow.
I could barely sit up.
Eli climbed onto the edge of my bed and took my hand.
"I'm sorry I didn't say something sooner," he whispered.
"I thought I was wrong."
He was six years old.
He had been carrying this alone.
"Where did you see him take her, baby?"
"The stairwell by the nurses' station.
He put her in a bag.
A big blue bag."
My stomach dropped.
Luke had brought that bag from home.
I had watched him pack it two days before my due date.
I thought it was just extra clothes.
Security came back four minutes later.
One of them spoke quietly to Camille.
Her face went pale.
I grabbed the bed rail.
"Did you find her?"
Camille turned to me slowly.
"We found the bag."
"And June?"
She didn't answer fast enough.
Then my phone buzzed on the nightstand.
An unknown number.
I answered it without thinking.
A woman's voice.
Calm.
Like she had been waiting.
"Don't let them tell you this was random.
Luke didn't act alone.
And if you want your daughter back safely, you need to stop talking to the police right now."
The line went d*ad.
