Eli was screaming when Luke wheeled the bassinet into my room.
"That isn't June!"
Luke tried to pull him away.
But Eli kept pointing at the newborn.
"I saw him move two babies.
He switched their blankets."
Nurse Camille arrived and immediately examined the ankle ID.
The clasp was open.
The scanner flashed red.
Nobody spoke.
Then another mother appeared in the doorway with an empty bassinet.
The moment she saw the baby beside my bed, her face collapsed.
"That's mine."
I looked closer.
A crescent-shaped birthmark rested behind the infant's ear.
My daughter didn't have one.
Camille activated a Code Pink.
The maternity floor locked down.
Elevators were secured.
Security officers entered.
Then Eli told them he knew where Luke had taken the other baby.
Luke moved toward him.
Security stopped him.
I pressed a hand against my C-section incision and stared at the man I had trusted throughout my pregnancy.
"Luke…
where is June?"
His face answered before his mouth did.
And that was when I knew whatever he had done had been planned long before we entered that hospital.
