I got both children upstairs and into Lucas's room.

I told them we were going on a little adventure.

Lucas didn't believe me — he was six, not two — but he held Amelia's hand anyway and didn't ask questions.

That was the moment I nearly broke.

I didn't let myself.

I had three suitcases already packed inside the wardrobe.

I had been adding things quietly for eleven days.

A few pieces of clothing at a time.

The children's favourite toys.

Their medical records.

Every document with my name on it.

I heard Brandon's footsteps on the stairs.

He didn't knock.

"Charlotte, this is not how adults handle things."

I lifted the first suitcase off the shelf.

"You brought a woman into our home in front of your mother, your brother, and our children.

Don't talk to me about how adults handle things."

He stepped closer.

"You have no job.

You have no money of your own.

You're eight months pregnant.

Where exactly do you think you're going?"

I turned and looked at him directly.

"Somewhere you don't know about."

That was when his phone buzzed on the dresser.

He glanced at it.

His face changed.

It was a message from someone named R.

Harlow — and the preview showed four words before the screen went dark.

*She already signed everything.*

Brandon looked up at me slowly.

For the first time that evening, he looked uncertain.
